In the taxonomy of microorganisms, the Methanomicrobiales are an order of the Methanomicrobia. Methanomicrobiales are strictly carbon dioxide reducing methanogens, using hydrogen or formate as the reducing agent.{{cite book|author=D.R. Boone |display-authors=etal|date=2001|title=Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology|url=https://archive.org/details/bergeysmanualofs00boon |url-access=registration |edition=2nd|location=New York|publisher=Springer}}

As seen from the phylogenetic tree based on 'The All-Species Living Tree' Project the family Methanomicrobiaceae is highly polyphyletic within the Methanomicrobiales.
