=Reform of collection practices=
The Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Sstem, like the two other major systems in the region, was criticized for its pursuit of payment from poor patients. For example, in July 2007, Carrie Barrett went to the emergency room at Methodist University Hospital complaining about shortness of breath, swelling of her legs and black discoloration of her toes. She was billed $12,019 for her two night stay, and after a lawsuit was filed against her she ended owing approximately $33,000. Between 2014 and 2018 Methodist Healthcare filed over 8,300 lawsuits for unpaid bills.{{Cite web| title = This nonprofit hospital makes millions, owns a collection agency and relentlessly sues the poor| author = Thomas, Wendi C.| work = The Commercial Appeal| date = 2019-06-27| access-date = 16 December 2019| url = https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/2019/06/27/methodist-lebonheur-healthcare-debt-collection-medical-bill-propublica/1577883001/}} This collection practice was ended soon after it received negative publicity,{{Cite web|title=Methodist Le Bonheur suspending court collections|url=https://dailymemphian.com/article/5992/Methodist-Le-Bonheur-suspending-court-collections|access-date=2020-11-15|website=Memphis Local, Sports, Business & Food News {{!}} Daily Memphian|language=en}} and it was reversed, erasing millions in patient debt.{{Cite web|date=2019-07-30|title=Methodist to raise employee pay to $15 an hour, revise charity care policy|url=https://mlk50-newspack.newspackstaging.com/2019/07/30/methodist-to-raise-employee-pay-to-15-an-hour-revise-charity-care-policy/|access-date=2020-11-15|website=MLK50: Justice Through Journalism|language=en-US}}{{Cite web|last=Thomas|first=Wendi C.|date=2019-12-24|title=Methodist erased $11.9 million in hospital debt for thousands; here are four stories|url=https://mlk50.com/2019/12/24/methodist-erased-11-9-million-in-hospital-debt-for-thousands-here-are-four-stories/|access-date=2020-11-15|website=MLK50: Justice Through Journalism|language=en-US}}
