Michelle Gooris, also known as DutchPilotGirl (born 1991 or 1992), is a Dutch pilot and YouTuber.{{cite news |last1=Lakritz |first1=Talia |date=4 December 2017 |title=Meet the 25-year-old Dutch pilot who's taking over Instagram |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/michelle-gooris-dutch-pilot-instagram-selfies-passenger-planes-aviation-a8090941.html |access-date=3 September 2024 |publisher=The Independent}}
Career
Born 1991 or 1992, Gooris was initially aimed at a medical career going to medical school.{{cite web |title=This Dutch pilot wants to inspire more women to pursue aviation |url=https://www.stylist.co.uk/travel/pilot-instagram-account-dutch-pilot-girl-aviation/8085 |website=www.stylist.co.uk |access-date=3 September 2024}} She decided to change career directions and began her training to become a pilot when she was 19 years old at the CAE Aviation Academies in Oxford, Amsterdam and Arizona, for two years of courses. Her grandfather had become a pilot when he was 74 and Gooris was 17, and he encouraged her to also take up flying. She now encourages people to consider being pilots, but especially women who she says are still under represented in the field. She says that 95% of pilots are male, a statistic that is mirrored in her YouTube viewer demographics.{{cite news |last1=Hardingham-Gill |first1=Tamara |title=The high-flying world of the pilots of Instagram |url=https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/pilots-of-instagram/index.html |access-date=3 September 2024 |work=CNN |date=13 July 2021 |language=en}} In 2021, India had the highest percentage of female pilots, but that was still just 12%.
She graduated as a pilot in 2013, and she started her YouTube channel under her alias DutchPilotGirl June 2014 gaining hundreds of thousands of subscribers and ten of millions of views over the following decade. Her first videos were of her first solo flights in a Piper PA-28 Cherokee and a Diamond DA40 Diamond Star.{{cite web |title=DutchPilotGirl |url=https://www.youtube.com/@DutchPilotGirl/videos |website=YouTube - Videos|access-date=3 September 2024 |language=en}}
Initially after qualifying she failed to find a job flying and it was two years before she got her first job working for Ryanair as the copilot of a Boeing 737. Before landing a job as a pilot she kept her focus on aviation working as an instructor at a flight simulator.{{cite web |title=Beeldschone Ryanair pilote Michelle vliegt over het internet |url=https://fhm.nl/entertainment/beeldschone-ryanair-pilote-michelle-vliegt-het-internet |website=FHM |access-date=3 September 2024 |language=nl |date=20 April 2017}} She later moved to a Palma de Mallorca based charter company after around 500 flight hours with Ryanair.
As well as her social media used to promote flying Gooris also wrote an ebook called Become an Airline Pilot.{{cite web |title=Dutch Pilot Girl: meet youtube sensation Michelle Gooris |url=https://travelradar.aero/dutch-pilot-girl-meet-youtube-sensation-michelle-gooris/ |website=Travel Radar - Aviation News |access-date=3 September 2024 |date=11 March 2021}} She has also created other resources to help people considering this career path, including a mobile app and a website.
