MicroSIP is a lightweight, open-source software application that enables users to make Voice over IP (VoIP) calls using the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard. It is designed to be simple, easy to use, and resource-efficient, making it an ideal choice for low-resource devices, such as older computers, and for users who need a minimalistic VoIP client. MicroSIP allows users to initiate audio and video calls, as well as exchange messages, via SIP-based VoIP networks.
History
MicroSIP was developed by the team at MicroSIP Technologies, a software development company. The project was launched in 2013 with the aim of creating a SIP client that offered essential features while keeping resource usage to a minimum. The software was initially targeted at users in business environments, but its simplicity and performance led to wider adoption by individual users and smaller organizations.
Since its release, MicroSIP has been maintained as an open-source project. It has had regular updates and improvements.
Features
= Core features =
- Voice and video calls: MicroSIP supports both voice and video calling, enabling users to communicate over the internet.
- Instant messaging: Users can send and receive text messages to and from other SIP-compatible devices.
- SIP protocol support: Fully supports the SIP protocol, making it compatible with a wide range of VoIP services and PBX systems.
- Minimal resource usage: Designed to run on low-resource devices, it has a small footprint in terms of both system resources and installation size.
- Cross-platform: MicroSIP is available for multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, allowing for seamless use across different operating systems.
- No need for external softphones: MicroSIP operates independently, without the need for additional software, making setup and configuration relatively easy.
= Advanced Features =
- TLS and SRTP encryption: For secure communications, MicroSIP supports Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) encryption, ensuring that voice and video calls are protected from eavesdropping.
- Call forwarding and call transfer: These features allow users to redirect or transfer calls during a session, offering more flexibility in managing communications.
- Multiple accounts: Users can configure and switch between multiple SIP accounts, which is particularly useful for users managing multiple VoIP services or accounts.
Technical specifications
MicroSIP uses the PJSIP (PJSUA API) library, an open-source multimedia communication library that enables the implementation of VoIP, video calling, and instant messaging functionality. This choice of library ensures that the application is lightweight, highly optimized, and compatible with modern VoIP standards.
- Supported audio xodecs: G.711, G.729, Opus, Speex, and more.
- Supported video xodecs: VP8, H.264.
- Encryption support: TLS, SRTP, and ZRTP for secure communications.
- Operating systems supported: Windows, macOS, Linux.
- Installation size: The installation package is small, typically under 10MB, making it easy to download and install.
