Hayward and Khamis claimed in an academic journal for Shima that many of the micronations featured on the wiki were, in fact virtual entities which existed almost solely as listings on the encyclopedia. They claimed that some users treated the website as a 'fantasy gaming service,' where 'players' could interact with other 'virtual micronations' while noting that this is not the purpose of MicroWiki advocated by its administration.{{cite journal |last1=Hayward |first1=Philip |date=2018 |title=Secessionism, submergence and Siteresponsive art: The Embassy of the Commonwealth of New Bayswater at the 1st Fremantle Biennale|url=https://opus.lib.uts.edu.au/bitstream/10453/130709/1/n.-Hayward-Shima-v12n1-3.pdf |journal=Shima: The International Journal of Research into Island Cultures|volume=12 |pages=163–168|doi=10.21463/shima.12.1.14 |s2cid=195031869 |issn=1834-6057|access-date=15 April 2021}} In the Cambridge University Press book Micronations and the Search for Sovereignty, MicroWiki is mentioned several times as an online community for online micronations.{{Cite book |last1=Hobbs |first1=Harry |url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/micronations-and-the-search-for-sovereignty/B0414A3A322695D9EE71E4CDDFDA06DE |title=Micronations and the Search for Sovereignty |last2=Williams |first2=George |date=2022 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |isbn=978-1-009-15012-5 |series=Cambridge Studies in Constitutional Law |location=Cambridge}}
