History

This institution can trace its origins back to the Ministry of War, which Emperor Menelik II established in 1907, and made Fitawrari Habte Giyorgis Minister over it.{{Cite book|first=Bahru |last=Zewde |title=A History of Modern Ethiopia |edition=2nd |location=London |publisher=James Currey |year=2001 |page=115}} Emperor Haile Selassie re-established the Ministry of War in 1942, making Ras Abebe Aregai its Minister.{{sfn|Perham|1969|p=85}} The Ministry is headed by a civilian minister which is a requirement of Article 87 of the current constitution of Ethiopia. It was established 23 August 1995 with the passing of Proclamation 4/1995, which also established the other 14 Ministries.[http://www.ethiopar.net/type/English/hopre/bills/2004_2005/Proc%20No.%204-1995%20Definition%20of%20Powers%20and%20Duties%20of%20the%20Exec.pdf Text of the proclamation]{{dead link|date=February 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} (accessed 13 July 2010)

On 9 January 2022, a new building of the Ministry of Defense was inaugurated. The five floor building of more than 700 offices and facilities serves now as the headquarters of the ministry, and is located on 13 hectares of land in Addis Ababa.{{Cite web |last=Tadesse |first=Helen |date=2022-01-09 |title=Defense Ministry Inaugurates New State of Art Building |url=https://waltainfo.com/defense-ministry-inaugurates-new-state-of-art-building/ |access-date=2022-06-12 |language=en-AU}}{{Cite web |title=Defense Ministry Inaugurates New Headquarters – Ethiopian Monitor |date=9 January 2022 |url=https://ethiopianmonitor.com/2022/01/09/defense-ministry-inaugurates-new-headquarters/ |access-date=2022-06-12 |language=en-US}}
