MiraclePlus ({{Zh|c=|p=Qíjī Chuàngtán|s=奇绩创坛}}) is a Chinese venture capital firm headquartered in Beijing founded in 2018. It was spun off as an independent firm after Y Combinator China was closed. It is one of the largest startup accelerators in China.
Background
In 2018, Y Combinator (YC) established a unit in China known as YC China. It was led by Lu Qi, a former executive who had worked at Microsoft and Baidu.{{Cite web |last=Yu |first=Yifan |date=22 November 2019 |title=Leading US startup incubator Y Combinator shutters China unit |url=https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Startups/Leading-US-startup-incubator-Y-Combinator-shutters-China-unit |website=Nikkei Asia |access-date=23 March 2024 |archive-date=23 March 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240323065543/https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Startups/Leading-US-startup-incubator-Y-Combinator-shutters-China-unit |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |last=Roof |first=Katie |date=21 November 2019 |title=Y Combinator Ends China Accelerator |url=https://www.wsj.com/articles/y-combinator-ends-china-accelerator-11574363965 |access-date=23 March 2024 |work=WSJ |language=en-US |archive-date=23 March 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240323065540/https://www.wsj.com/articles/y-combinator-ends-china-accelerator-11574363965 |url-status=live }}
In November 2019 affected by the China–United States trade war, YC announced that it would be closing YC China. It stated it would revert to its original strategy of supporting companies from its Silicon Valley headquarters.
Lu and the members of YC China then established MiraclePlus as an independent firm. It had already start fundraising six months prior to YCs formal announcement when it was still part of YC and had opened its first startup incubation program in China. The format was similar to YC but had a more localized operation.{{Cite web |last=Matters |first=Venture |date=21 September 2020 |title=Venture Matters {{!}} MiraclePlus: Incubating a new generation of Chinese startups |url=https://kr-asia.com/venture-matters-miracleplus-incubating-a-new-generation-of-chinese-startups |access-date=23 March 2024 |website=KrASIA |language=en |archive-date=23 March 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240323070300/https://kr-asia.com/venture-matters-miracleplus-incubating-a-new-generation-of-chinese-startups |url-status=live }}
In Spring 2020, MiraclePlus held its second incubation program which differed from its first one as it was run under the MiraclePlus brand rather than YC. The program also asked startups to stipulate "Why now?" in their pitches which was different from the approach at YC. According to Lu, it had 20% more applicants than the first one.
MiraclePlus' first fund had received $55 million in funding at the end of October 2019 according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. After MiraclePlus became independent it continued to acquire funding with its investors including Sequoia Capital, University of Michigan and Liu Qiangdong.{{Cite web |last=Zhao |first=Lu |date=16 June 2020 |title=MiraclePlus Welcomes Investment from Sequoia, Former JD.com CEO After Y Combinator Exit |url=https://pandaily.com/miracleplus-welcomes-investment-from-sequoia-former-jd-com-ceo-after-y-combinator-exit/ |access-date=23 March 2024 |website=Pandaily |language=en-US |archive-date=23 March 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240323065541/https://pandaily.com/miracleplus-welcomes-investment-from-sequoia-former-jd-com-ceo-after-y-combinator-exit/ |url-status=live }}
According to Lu, the aims of the incubation program is to accelerate product-market fit and to help startup companies survive longer.{{Cite web |last=杨 |first=丽 |date=25 November 2020 |title=陆奇:奇绩创坛不是资本,希望建立一个早期创业社区 {{!}} 雷峰网 |url=https://www.leiphone.com/category/industrynews/cZgLqXnz7BZWdTw2.html |access-date=23 March 2024 |website=www.leiphone.com |archive-date=23 March 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240323071014/https://www.leiphone.com/category/industrynews/cZgLqXnz7BZWdTw2.html |url-status=live }}
