Mischa Cotlar (1913, Sarny, Russian Empire – January 16, 2007, Buenos Aires, Argentina){{cite news|title=Falleció el notable matemático Mischa Cotlar |trans-title=The notable mathematician Mischa Cotlar died |language=Spanish |publisher=La Nación |url=http://www.lanacion.com.ar/875902-fallecio-el-notable-matematico-mischa-cotlar |date=January 17, 2007 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20161009171143/http://www.lanacion.com.ar/875902-fallecio-el-notable-matematico-mischa-cotlar |archive-date=October 9, 2016 |url-status=dead }} was a mathematician who started his scientific career in Uruguay and worked most of his life on it in Argentina and Venezuela.
His contributions to mathematics are in the fields of harmonic analysis, ergodic theory and spectral theory. He introduced the Cotlar–Stein lemma. He was the author or co-author of over 80 articles in refereed journals.{{cite book|editor=Sadosky, Cora|chapter=Introduction of Professor Mischa Cotlar to the National Academy of Exact Sciences of Argentina by Alberto P. According to Alberto Calderón, Cotlar showed in 1955 "that theorems on singular integrals can be generalized and put in the framework of ergodic theory."{{cite journal|author=Calderón, Alberto P.|title=Ergodic theory and translation-invariant operators|journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America|volume=59|issue=2|year=1968|pages=349–353|doi=10.1073/pnas.59.2.349|pmid=16591604|pmc=224676|bibcode=1968PNAS...59..349C|doi-access=free}}{{cite journal|author=Cotlar, M.|title=A unified theory of Hilbert transforms and ergodic theorems|journal=Rev. Petersen in 1983 published an "especially direct proof"{{cite arXiv|author=Krause, B.|author2=Lacey, M.|author3=Wierdl, M.|year=2016|title=On convergence of modulated ergodic Hilbert transforms|class=math.CA|eprint=1610.04968}} of Cotlar's 1955 theorem.{{cite journal|author=Petersen, Karl|title=Another proof of the existence of the ergodic Hilbert transform|journal=Proc. In January 1994 in Caracas, an international conference was held in his honor.{{cite book|editor=Marcantognini, S. A. M.|editor2=Mendoza, G. A.|editor3=Morán, M.
