The name Quoin is believed to refer to the shape of the island which resembles a quoin of mire (a wedge used in naval cannons).
Access
The national park is closed to visitors due to its status as a significant seabird breeding site. It is one of only three recorded breeding sites in the northern Great Barrier Reef for great frigatebirds, and is also home to a large breeding colony of black noddies.{{Cite web |date=2011-07-25 |title=Mitirinchi Island National Park (CYPAL) |url=https://parks.desi.qld.gov.au/parks/mitirinchi-cypal |access-date=2024-05-16 |website=Parks and forests {{!}} Department of Environment and Science, Queensland |language=en-AU |archive-date=15 May 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240515225958/https://parks.desi.qld.gov.au/parks/mitirinchi-cypal |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=Unauthorised Entry Prohibited |url=https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/160235/mitirinchi-raa.pdf |access-date=16 May 2024 |website=Parks and forests |publisher=Queensland Government |archive-date=19 April 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210419102557/https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/160235/mitirinchi-raa.pdf |url-status=live }}
