The (old) Mo Chit Bus Terminal was the main bus station serving northern and northeastern routes of long-distance buses travelling to and from Bangkok. It was active from 1967 to 1998, when its operations moved to the Mo Chit 2 bus terminal, which then became known as New Mo Chit.{{cite web |title=History |url=http://transport.co.th/index.php/en/history-english.html |website=transport.co.th |publisher=The Transport Co., Ltd. |accessdate=21 October 2019 |date=8 June 2017}}{{cite news |title=ย้อน "หมอชิตเก่า" เล่าความหลัง หาเหตุผลย้าย "หมอชิตใหม่" อีกครั้ง |url=https://www.thairath.co.th/news/business/965658 |accessdate=21 October 2019 |work=Thairath Online |date=7 June 2017 |language=th}} The site of the old bus station now serves as the main depot of the BTS skytrain system, as well as one of its parking areas. It also lends its name to the BTS's Mo Chit station, which stands in front of the depot.
Name
The name Mo Chit ({{langx|th|หมอชิต}}) was derived from that of Mo Chit Market, which was held in the area before the bus station was built. The market's name, literally meaning "Doctor Chit", is in turn believed to refer to Chit Naphasap ({{langx|th|ชิต นภาศัพท์}}, 1895–1953), an entrepreneur best known for his brand of {{ill|ya nat|th|ยานัตถุ์}}, a Thai form of herbal snuff.{{cite web |author1=สุดารา สุจฉายา |title=หมอชิต หมอมี หมอเหล็ง - มูลนิธิเล็ก-ประไพ วิริยะพันธุ์ |url=http://lek-prapai.org/home/view.php?id=192 |website=lek-prapai.org |publisher=Lek-Prapai Viriyahpant Foundation |accessdate=21 October 2019 |language=th |date=8 June 2016}}
