History
File:StanRTA route 33 bus at Modesto Transportation Center, May 2022.JPG
The Central Pacific Railroad was built through Modesto in 1870, and was taken over by the Southern Pacific in 1884. In 1915, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a new Mission Revival-style station. It was used until 1971, when Amtrak took over intercity passenger service.{{cite news |last1=Holland |first1=John |title=Modesto's plan for ACE train depot passes muster with guardians of historic treasures |url=https://www.modbee.com/news/local/article246620078.html |accessdate=29 October 2020 |agency=Modesto Bee |date=23 October 2020}} When Amtak restored service to Modesto with the San Joaquin in 1974, the former Santa Fe station in Riverbank was used instead. (It was replaced with the modern Modesto station in 1999.{{cite web |url=http://www.greatamericanstations.com/stations/modesto-ca-mod/ |title=Modesto, CA (MOD) |publisher=Amtrak |work=Great American Stations}})
The depot was restored in 1993 as a bus terminal.
Rail service is expected to be restored in 2026 as part of the Altamont Corridor Express Merced Extension project to Merced via Ceres.{{cite news |last1=Holland |first1=John |title=Turlock commuter train extension gets another $57 million.
