Module inserts an extraneous closing span tag in some circumstances

Please see [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Jonesey95/sandbox2&oldid=883591193 my sandbox] for an example. The module inserts a closing {{tag|span|c}} tag without opening it first. Can this be fixed? I don't know enough Lua to fix it. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 10:11, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
