Early life

Ghatak hails from Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman district. His father's name is Phani Bhusan Ghatak. He did his graduation with Political Science honours from Ananda Chandra College, Jalpaiguri and LL.B from Calcutta University in 1982.

Politics

He is an MLA of All India Trinamool Congress, elected from the Asansol Uttar constituency of Paschim Bardhaman district{{Cite news|work=Indian Express|title=Asansol Uttar (West Bengal) Assembly Election Results 2021 |url=https://indianexpress.com/elections/asansol-uttar-west-bengal-assembly-election-results-2021-live-winner-runner-up-candidates-7294865/}} in the 2011, 2016 and 2021 West Bengal state assembly election{{Cite news|work=ABP News|title=আসানসোল উত্তর (Asansol Uttar Election Results) |url=https://bengali.abplive.com/elections/west-bengal-election-results-2021/wb-asansol-uttar-constituency-281.html}} and had previously been an MLA from Hirapur constituency during the period of 2001–2006. He played an instrumental part and leading role in bringing about the creation of the new Paschim Bardhaman District, which is the 23rd district of West Bengal, with its headquarters at Asansol.

Legal career
