Molybdenum oxytetrachloride is the inorganic compound with the formula {{chem2|MoOCl4|auto=1}}. This thermally unstable, dark green solid is used to prepare other complexes of molybdenum. Its molecule adopts a square pyramidal molecular geometry of C4v symmetry. As for other Mo(VI) compounds, it is diamagnetic. It decomposes thermally to Molybdenum oxytrichloride.
Preparation
It is prepared by treating molybdenum pentachloride with oxygen.{{cite book|doi=10.1002/9780470132418.ch8|chapter=Molybdenum(VI) Oxide Chloride|series=Inorganic Syntheses|pages=54–57|year=1967|last1=Mallock|first1=Alan K.|title=Inorganic Syntheses|volume=10|isbn=9780470132418}} It also arises by chlorination of molybdenum trioxide:{{cite book|doi=10.1002/9780470132548.ch41|chapter=Tungsten and Molybdenum Tetrachloride Oxides|series=Inorganic Syntheses|pages=323–325|year=1985|last1=Nielson|first1=A.
