Money Money 2020 is the debut studio album by new wave band The Network, a side project of the band Green Day. It was released on September 30, 2003, through Adeline Records. Members of Green Day have denied being involved in the Network, however, Mike Dirnt revealed that they had a hand in the album.{{Cite magazine|last=Fricke|first=David|date=2013-03-01|title=Q&A: Green Day's Mike Dirnt on Billie Joe Armstrong's Recovery|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/qa-green-days-mike-dirnt-on-billie-joe-armstrongs-recovery-168010/|access-date=2020-08-14|magazine=Rolling Stone|language=en-US}} It was the band's only release for seventeen years until they returned in 2020 with a sequel album entitled Money Money 2020 Part II: We Told Ya So!.
Background
After the release of Green Day's sixth studio album Warning (2000) and its mixed commercial performance,{{cite web |last1=Coffman |first1=Tim |title='Warning': The album Billie Joe Armstrong thought no one understood |url=https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/album-billie-joe-armstrong-no-one-understood/ |website=Far Out Magazine |date=January 18, 2024 |access-date=26 April 2024}} the band started work on their next album. This follow-up album started to be recorded in 2003 and was intended to be named Cigarettes and Valentines.{{cite web |last1=Scanlon |first1=Kelly |title='Cigarettes and Valentines': The Green Day album that disappeared |url=https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/cigarettes-and-valentines-the-green-day-album-that-disappeared/ |website=Far Out Magazine |date=August 16, 2023 |access-date=26 April 2024}} The master tapes were stolen, however, and the band decided to scrap the project and start over.{{cite web |last1=Geraghty |first1=Hollie |title=Green Day on the "bummer" of their pre-'American Idiot' album 'Cigarettes & Valentines' being stolen |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/green-day-on-the-bummer-of-their-pre-american-idiot-album-cigarettes-valentines-being-stolen-3575656 |website=NME |date=January 23, 2024 |access-date=26 April 2024}} In between Cigarettes and Valentines and the release of American Idiot in 2004, Money Money 2020 was recorded some time in the summer of 2003.{{Citation needed|date=April 2024}}
It was originally speculated by some reviewers{{cite web |last1=Hebblethwaite |first1=Phil |title=6 secret pop star aliases that had us fooled |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/articles/94f23bcf-22a0-4224-b90f-73d0d8497fb7 |website=BBC UK |date=August 23, 2017 |access-date=26 April 2024}} that Cigarettes and Valentines eventually became Money Money 2020.
