History
The name "Monkton" means 'Monks' farm/settlement'{{cite web|url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Devon/Monkton|title=Monkton Key to English Place-names|publisher=The University of Nottingham|access-date=8 March 2019}} and is likely to have been of Ango-Saxon origin.{{cite web|url=http://monkton-devon.org/archaeological-history/|title=Archaeological History|publisher=Monkton Parish Council|access-date=8 March 2019}} The parish was historically in the Colyton hundred.{{cite web|url=https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/Hundreds#Colyton|title=The Hundreds of Devon|publisher=GENUKI|access-date=8 March 2019}} On the 24th of March 1884 an area from Combe Raleigh parish was transferred to the parish.
