Born in Trento, Moser comes from a family of professional cyclists; his uncles Francesco and Aldo both finished in the top five overall placings of Grand Tour events, with Francesco winning the Giro d'Italia in 1984, and another uncle, Enzo, also wore the leader's jersey in the Giro.{{cite web |url=http://www.repubblica.it/rubriche/la-storia/2011/06/14/news/moser_dinastia-17671677/ |title=Moser, dinastia senza tramonto "Ora tocca a figli e nipoti" |last=Crosetti |first=Maurizio |date=14 June 2011|website=repubblica.it|language=it |trans-title=Moser, the dynasty that never sets: "Now it's up to the children and grandchildren" |access-date=10 May 2016}} His father Diego, brothers Leonardo and Matteo and cousin Ignazio also competed professionally. Moser achieved his first professional victory in February 2012, at the Trofeo Laigueglia, after making a solo bid for victory in the closing stages.{{cite news|url=http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/18022012/58/moser-wins-trofeo-laigueglia.html|title=Moser wins Trofeo Laigueglia|work=Yahoo! Moser won his first UCI World Tour race at the Tour de Pologne in July. During the race's first stage, Moser launched a late attack in the closing kilometre, in Jelenia Góra; he managed to hold off the rest of the field for the stage win.{{cite news|url=http://www.bicycle.net/2012/moreno-moser-takes-stage-1-at-tour-de-pologne|title=Moreno Moser Takes Stage 1 At Tour de Pologne|work=Bicycle.net|publisher=Thinkaram|date=10 July 2012|access-date=18 July 2012}} He held the race lead until the fourth stage, when {{UCI team code|OPQ|2012}}'s Michał Kwiatkowski took the lead through bonus seconds gained at intermediate sprint points.{{cite news|url=http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/12384/Tour-of-Poland-Aidis-Kruopis-edges-Ben-Swift-in-stage-four-sprint.aspx|title=Aidis Kruopis edges Ben Swift in stage four sprint|first=Kyle|last=Moore|work=VeloNation|publisher=VeloNation LLC|date=13 July 2012|access-date=18 July 2012}} On the penultimate stage, Moser took his second stage victory after passing {{UCI team code|SKY|2012}} rider Sergio Henao in the closing metres, after he had gone off the front with an attack.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/533909/stannard-attacks-all-the-way-in-tour-of-poland-stage-six.html|title=Stannard attacks all the way in Tour of Poland stage six|work=Cycling Weekly|publisher=IPC Media Limited|date=15 July 2012|access-date=18 July 2012}} Moser stayed out of trouble on the final stage, and won the race overall by five seconds, ahead of Kwiatkowski.{{cite news|url=http://www.uci.ch/Modules/ENews/ENewsDetails2011.asp?id=ODQ3MA&MenuId=MTYzMDQ&LangId=1&BackLink=%2FTemplates%2FUCI%2FUCI8%2Flayout%2Easp%3FMenuID%3DMTYzMDQ%26LangId%3D1|title=Moser shows his talent at the Tour de Pologne|work=UCI.ch|publisher=Union Cycliste Internationale|date=16 July 2012|access-date=18 July 2012}}
In the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, Moser came close to victory as he was part of a group of four escapees that held a very small advantage over the lead group as they crossed the last kilometer mark. {{UCI team code|KAT|2012}}'s Alexandr Kolobnev produced an acceleration, but was passed by Moser and Lars Petter Nordhaug ({{UCI team code|SKY|2012}}), the latter grabbing the victory. Moser held on to second place, two seconds in arrears of the victor, while some members of the chasing group crossed the line only two seconds behind Moser.{{cite news|url=http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/12832/Lars-Petter-Nordhaug-nails-career-best-win-in-GP-Cycliste-de-Montreal.aspx|title=Lars Petter Nordhaug nails career best win in GP Cycliste de Montréal|work=VeloNation|publisher=VeloNation LLC|date=9 September 2012|access-date=10 September 2012|first=Kyle|last=Moore}}

In February, Moser helped his team-mate Peter Sagan win the Gran Premio Città di Camaiore by pulling the leading group and nullifying attacks such as one from their former team-mate Vincenzo Nibali, now riding for the {{UCI team code|AST|2013}} team.{{cite news|url=http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/14034/Sagan-over-bronchitis-sprints-to-victory-in-GP-Camaiore.aspx|title=Sagan over bronchitis, sprints to victory in G.P. Camaiore|work=VeloNation|publisher=VeloNation LLC|date=28 February 2013|access-date=3 March 2013|first=Shane|last=Stokes}} The following weekend, Moser then took victory at Strade Bianche in Siena, accelerating away from the peloton with around {{convert|17|km|abbr=on}} remaining in pursuit of a four-rider breakaway. He caught up to them and accelerated away from them on the final climb, a steep 16% gradient ramp inside the final kilometre; he led home a {{UCI team code|CAN|2013}} one-two, as Sagan was able to finish in second place.{{cite news|url=http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/03/news/moreno-moser-wins-2013-strade-bianche-on-final-climb_276525|title=Moreno Moser wins 2013 Strade Bianche on final climb|work=VeloNews|publisher=Competitor Group, Inc.|date=2 March 2013|access-date=2 March 2013}}
