Its native range is southern Mexico to Colombia. It is also found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panamá. Fossils indicate that it has been in its present range since the Miocene. Eocene-aged pollen from Europe and Southern China attributable to the genus indicate a wider distribution in the Northern Hemisphere in the past.{{Cite journal|last1=Hofmann|first1=Christa-Ch.|last2=Kodrul|first2=Tatiana M.|last3=Liu|first3=Xiaoyan|last4=Jin|first4=Jianhua|date=June 2019|title=Scanning electron microscopy investigations of middle to late Eocene pollen from the Changchang Basin (Hainan Island, South China) – Insights into the paleobiogeography and fossil history of Juglans, Fagus, Lagerstroemia, Mortoniodendron, Cornus, Nyssa, Symplocos and some Icacinaceae in SE Asia|url=https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0034666718301829|journal=Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology|language=en|volume=265|pages=41–61|doi=10.1016/j.revpalbo.2019.02.004|bibcode=2019RPaPa.265...41H |s2cid=134630351 |url-access=subscription}}
