Description

One of the names of the volcano refers to the suffocating fumes experienced on the island; volcanic fumes spew from the mountain and to this is added the stench of penguin guano. The fumes can indeed suffocate a visitor to the island.{{Cite web |last=Osborne |first=Hannah |date=2016-07-06 |title=Erupting volcanos are threatening one of the world's largest penguin colonies |url=https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/two-erupting-volcanoes-threatening-one-worlds-largest-penguin-colonies-1569295 |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=International Business Times UK |language=en}} These qualities have given names to a number of Zavodovski Island's other features. Thus changing the way the penguins adapted to the Island for all could be known the penguins have started to change and grow{{cite web|url=http://mapcarta.com/19198220|title=Stench Point|work=Mapcarta|accessdate=3 November 2016}}

The volcano erupted in March 2016; by July, between one third and one half of the island was covered in ash, putting the penguin colonies at risk.{{cite web|title=Penguins on world's smelliest island in danger as volcano erupts, covering them in ash|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/07/06/penguins-on-worlds-smelliest-island-in-danger-as-volcano-erupts/|website=Telegraph|date=6 July 2016 |accessdate=3 November 2016 |last1=Knapton |first1=Sarah }}
