Naming
In 2013, the range was officially renamed Kirikirikatata / Mount Cook Range as part of a number of name changes within the Mount Cook region, following a 2012 proposal. According to Māori creation myths, Kirikirikatata was the grandfather of Aoraki, both of whom turned into mountains; Kirikirikatata into the Mount Cook Range, and Aoraki into Mount Cook.{{cite news |last1=Littlewood |first1=Matthew |title=Dual names accepted in Aoraki-Mt Cook |url=https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/8500887/Dual-names-accepted-in-Aoraki-Mt-Cook |access-date=21 November 2021 |work=Stuff |date=2 April 2013 |language=en}}{{cite news |title=Maori names proposed for Mt Cook mountain range |url=https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/te-manu-korihi/120365/maori-names-proposed-for-mt-cook-mountain-range |access-date=21 November 2021 |work=RNZ |date=8 November 2012 |language=en-nz}}
