Mount Jefferson is the highest mountain in both the Toquima Range and Nye County in Nevada, United States. It is the sixth highest mountain in the state.{{cite peakbagger |lid=21324 |name=Nevada 11,000-foot Peaks |access-date=2014-10-22}} As the high point of a range which is well separated from other ranges by low basins, Mount Jefferson has a high topographic prominence of {{convert|5861|ft|0}}. This makes it the most prominent peak in Nye County and the third most prominent peak in Nevada (after Charleston Peak and Wheeler Peak).{{cite peakbagger |lid=41313 |name=Nevada Peaks with 2000 feet of Prominence |access-date=2014-10-23}} For similar reasons, it is also the highest mountain for over 90 miles in all directions. It is located about {{convert|50|mi|0}} northeast of the county seat of Tonopah within the Alta Toquima Wilderness of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, near the smaller towns of Carvers and Round Mountain. Three distinct summits are located on a broad area of subalpine tundra: North Summit rises to {{convert|11,820|ft|0}},{{cite peakbagger |pid=3498 |name=Mount Jefferson-North Summit, Nevada |access-date=2014-01-27}} Middle Summit to {{convert|11,692|ft|0}},{{cite peakbagger |pid=3499 |name=Mount Jefferson-Middle Summit, Nevada |access-date=2014-01-27}} and South Summit to {{convert|11949|ft|0}}. During the Pleistocene, alpine glaciers eroded several cirques east of the summit plateau.
