History

In November 2007, Mountain Dew launched a campaign called "DEWmocracy" in which the public would elect on new flavors to become part of the brand line. DEWmocracy participation and voting was conducted via an online game. Voltage was one of three finalists, along with the flavors Revolution and Supernova. As part of the first DEWmocracy promotion, all three were released in stores in the summer of 2008 as limited edition flavors, while consumers voted on the variant to be added as an extension to the brand.{{Cite news |last=Tanner |first=Steve |date=28 May 2008 |title=Mountain Dew Voltage |work=BevReview |url=http://www.bevreview.com/2008/05/28/review-mountain-dew-voltage/ |url-status=dead |access-date=6 November 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110319033156/http://www.bevreview.com/2008/05/28/review-mountain-dew-voltage/ |archive-date=19 March 2011 |df=dmy-all}}{{cite web |title=Mountain Dew Voltage Wins DEWmocracy Election to Become New Brand Line Extension |url=https://www.bevnet.com/news/2008/8-19-2008-mt_dew_voltage.asp |website=BevNet |access-date=6 November 2023 |date=August 19, 2008}} On August 17, 2008, Voltage was announced as the winner with 42% of all votes, and it was released on December 29, 2008 as a permanent flavor.{{cite book |last1=Libert |first1=Barry |title=Social Nation: How to Harness the Power of Social Media to Attract Customers, Motivate Employees, and Grow Your Business |date=July 23, 2010 |publisher=Wiley |isbn=978-0470599266 |page=166 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7e86EYwjOTYC |access-date=6 November 2023}}
