Steve Poizner
After selling his high-tech businesses, Steve Poizner worked at the school as a volunteer teacher, writing about it in Mount Pleasant: My Journey from Creating a Billion-Dollar Company to Teaching at a Struggling Public High School, a book released in April 2010. Poizner invoked hyperbole while describing the school, including exaggerating crime and graduation rates at the school and in the neighborhood.{{Cite news|url=http://independent.com/news/2010/apr/08/meg-millions/|title=Capitol Letters: When it rains, it pours|last=Roberts|first=Jerry|date=8 April 2010|work=Santa Barbara Independent|access-date=5 May 2010}} Ira Glass and This American Life exposed the differences between Poizner's account and the true story of the school, with Glass calling the story "obviously and provably untrue."{{Cite news|url=http://laist.com/2010/04/27/shelve_under_fiction_poizners_book.php|title=Shelve Under Fiction? Pleasant's high school principal, Teresa Marquez, cancelled Poizner's visit to the school, then Marquez and students protested the book at a book signing.{{Cite news|url=https://www.sfgate.com/opinion/article/Republican-volunteers-at-school-oh-the-horrors-3193004.php|title=Republican volunteers at school - oh, the horrors|last=Saunders|first=Debra J.|work=San Francisco Gate|access-date=5 May 2010 | date=8 April 2010}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/politics/Upset-Crowd-Confronts-Poizner-at-Book-Signing-89768187.html|title=Outraged Protesters Confront Poizner at Book Signing|last=Greene|first=Jessica|date=2 April 2010|work=KNTV|access-date=5 May 2010}} The book reached the fifth position of the New York Times bestseller list, but that was possibly through altering of the sales data by ResultSource, a book marketing company.{{Cite web |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100504020956/http://www.capitolweekly.net/article.php?xid=ysyfbxbaesxv63 |archive-date=4 May 2010 |url=http://www.capitolweekly.net/article.php?xid=ysyfbxbaesxv63 |date=29 April 2010 |title=Hundreds reportedly received unsolicited copies of Poizner memoir |author=Malcolm Maclachlan |work=Capitol Weekly |access-date=17 March 2014}}{{Cite news |url=http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_14993102 |title=Internal Affairs: The mysterious case of Poizner's best-selling book |author=Scott Herhold |display-authors=etal |date=2 May 2010 |newspaper=The Mercury News |access-date=17 March 2014}} Ironically, the book title misspells the name of the school, as it is officially "Mt. Pleasant High School" and not "Mount Pleasant High School."
