Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated ({{lang|grc|ΜΣΥ}}) is an American multicultural intercollegiate sorority. It was founded in 1981 at Rutgers University–New Brunswick and is recognized as the first multicultural sorority in the nation.{{Cite web |date=2014-09-04 |title=Who We Are |url=https://www.msu1981.org/about/ |access-date=2023-02-26 |website=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. |language=en-US}} Mu Sigma Upsilon was a founding member of the National Multicultural Greek Council.

History

In the early 1980s, more women from culturally diverse backgrounds were pursuing college degrees. Five women came together and decided to create a support system for these women.{{Cite web |url=http://www.msu1981.org/ourlegacy/history/ |title=Our History |date=4 September 2014 |publisher=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority }} Mu Sigma Upsilon was founded on November 21, 1981, at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, as a Social Fellowship. The five Founding Mothers of Mu Sigma Upsilon are:

  • Eve Bracero - Puerto Rican
  • Lillian Sierra - Puerto Rican
  • Karinee Candelario - Puerto Rican
  • Ruth Gonzalez - Puerto Rican
  • Sylvia Vigo - Puerto Rican{{Cite web |url=http://www.msu1981.org/history/ |title=Founding Mothers |date=4 September 2014 |publisher=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority }}

In the early 1980s, Mu Sigma Upsilon became the first sorority to be founded with a multicultural, rather than a specific ethnic or cultural, base.{{Cite web |url=http://www.msu1981.org/ourlegacy/multiculturalism/ |title=Multiculturalism |publisher=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority |access-date=2013-11-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131203000639/http://www.msu1981.org/ourlegacy/multiculturalism/ |archive-date=2013-12-03 |url-status=dead }} Mu Sigma Upsilon became a Greek-lettered organization in the early 1990s.{{Cite web |title=The Inclusive Sorority |url=https://www.courant.com/2003/03/18/the-inclusive-sorority/ |access-date=2003-03-18 |publisher=The Courant}} It is the sister organization of Lambda Sigma Upsilon, a Latino-based fraternity.

R.A.C.E is a national event of the sorority. Each chapter runs its version of the event, where campus cultural organizations are invited to perform in costume and provide cultural displays for table-top exhibitions during the event. Members are encouraged to wear national dress about their cultural background or heritage and provide sample delicacies from all parts of the world.{{Cite web |title=New Jersey City University sorority will hold "R.A.C.E." |url=http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2010/11/new_jersey_city_university_sor.html/ |access-date=2010-11-30 |publisher=The Jersey Journal}}{{Cite web |date=4 September 2014 |title=R.A.C.E.< |url=http://www.msu1981.org/about-msu/msu-sponsored-events/ |publisher=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority}}

Previous philanthropies include:

Mu Sigma Upsilon's current philanthropy for 2021-2026 is: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP){{Cite web |date=2022-03-07 |title=National Philanthropy |url=https://www.msu1981.org/philanthropy/ |access-date=2023-02-26 |website=Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. |language=en-US}}
