In Egypt, in 1998, censorship controversies forced the American University in Cairo to stop publishing the book.{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/news/2004/jun/03/guardianobituaries.france|title=Obituary: Maxime Rodinson|last=Johnson|first=Douglas|date=2004-06-03|work=The Guardian|location=London|access-date=2019-06-03|language=en-GB|issn=0261-3077}}
