The fight

Quarry did better than in their first fight but once again struggled to close the distance with Ali, who once again dominated most of the fight from the outside. Quarry was hurt going into the seventh round, and after landing several unanswered shots, Ali signaled to the referee to stop the fight, which he did shortly afterwards.{{cite news|url=https://espn.go.com/classic/s/Ali_record.html |title=Muhammad Ali's ring record |work=ESPN |date=19 November 2003|access-date=4 October 2016}}{{cite book|title=Muhammad Ali:His Life and Times|author= Thomas Hauser|publisher=Simon & Schuster|pages = 210–12|year=1991}}{{cite book|title=Muhammad Ali: The Glory Years|author1=Felix Dennis |author2=Don Atyeo |publisher=miramax books|pages = 166–70;192|year=2003}}{{cite book|title=Heavyweight Boxing in the 1970s:The Great Fighters and Rivalries|author=Joe Ryan |publisher=McFarland & Company|pages = 50–3|year=2003}}{{cite news|url=http://www.myajc.com/news/sports/the-night-when-muhammad-ali-and-atlanta-shined/nn7z8/|title=The night when Muhammad Ali and Atlanta shined |work=The Atlanta Journal-Constitution |date=24 October 2015|access-date=4 October 2016}}{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2010/oct/27/muhammad-ali-jerry-quarry-october-1970|title=The night Muhammad Ali's legend was reborn – and the party that followed |work=The Guardian |date=26 October 2010|access-date=6 October 2016}}{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/obituary-jerry-quarry-1045085.html|title=Obituary: Jerry Quarry |work=The Independent |date=4 January 1999|access-date=6 October 2016}}{{cite web |author1=Neil Amdur |title=Ali Knocks Out Jerry Quarry in Seventh |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1972/06/28/archives/ali-knocks-out-jerry-quarry-in-seventh-foster-retains-title-in.html |website=nytimes.com |publisher=New York Times |access-date=2 July 2024 |date=28 June 1972}}
