History

MuleSource, as the company was originally called, was founded by Ross Mason and Dave Rosenberg in 2006. The company was built around the successful Open Source Software (OSS) project, Mule, which Ross Mason founded in 2003. The "mule" in the name comes from the drudgery, or "donkey work," of data and application integration that the platform was created to escape.{{cite web |title=MuleSoft About |url=https://www.mulesoft.com/about |accessdate=27 January 2020 |archive-date=8 April 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200408054253/https://www.mulesoft.com/about |url-status=live }}

The company changed its name to MuleSoft in 2009. MuleSoft originally provided middleware and messaging, and later expanded to provide an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) approach for companies through its main product, Anypoint Platform.{{cite web|url=https://www.451research.com/report-short?entityId=72350|title=MuleSoft blends middleware, devops and PaaS for API integration approach|publisher=|accessdate=29 July 2016|archive-date=9 March 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160309034255/https://451research.com/report-short?entityId=72350|url-status=live}}{{Cite news|url=https://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/definition/MuleSoft|title=What is MuleSoft? - Definition from WhatIs.com|work=SearchCloudComputing|access-date=2018-09-06|language=en-US|archive-date=2018-09-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180907032454/https://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/definition/MuleSoft|url-status=live}}

In April 2013, the company announced $37 million in Series E financing in a round led by New Enterprise Associates, with participation from new strategic investor Salesforce.com, and existing investors Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Morgenthaler Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Meritech Capital Partners, Sapphire Ventures (formerly SAP Ventures) and Bay Partners.
