Multicolor Active Galactic Nuclei Monitoring

Multicolor Active Galactic Nuclei Monitoring or MAGNUM was a project completed in 2008, that used a 2 meter (78.7 inch) telescope at Haleakala, Hawaii.{{cite web |title=Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site Management Plan |url=http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/haleakalanew/LRDP/images/HO%20Mgmt%20Plan-060810.pdf |date=2010-06-08 |publisher=University of Hawai‘i Institute for Astronomy |accessdate=2012-04-26}} The project started in 1995, and with telescope observations starting in 2000 for the scientific study of active galactic nuclei.{{cite journal | bibcode = 2003AAS...202.3803Y | title=The MAGNUM (Multicolor Active Galactic NUclei Monitoring) Project | journal=American Astronomical Society Meeting Abstracts #202 | volume=35 | page=752 | year=2003 |author1=Yoshii, Y. |author2=Kobayashi, Y. |author3=Minezaki, T. }} It was run by the University of Tokyo, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and Australian National University.{{Cite web|url=http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/info/press-releases/GRB-09-05.htm|title = UH Institute for Astronomy Press Release}} MAGNUM was one of the telescopes that observed a cosmic explosion billions of years away in 2005.{{cite web |url=http://www.redorbit.com/news/space/239453/hawaii_telescopes_record_cosmic_explosion/ |title=Hawaii Telescopes Record Cosmic Explosion - Space News - redOrbit |website=www.redorbit.com |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110522235108/http://www.redorbit.com/news/space/239453/hawaii_telescopes_record_cosmic_explosion/ |archive-date=2011-05-22}} The telescope was used for a long-term study of the size of the universe;{{Cite web|url=http://archives.starbulletin.com/2004/07/25/news/story4.html|title=Honolulu Star-Bulletin Hawaii News}} for example it studied the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC 5548, NGC 4051, NGC 3227, and NGC 7469http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/499326 The Astrophysical Journal, 639:46–63, 2006 March 1 "Reverberation Measurements of the Inner Radius of the Dust Torus in Nearby Seyfert 1 Galaxies" The telescope was located at the Haleakala Observatory and was installed in north dome previously used by LURE.

This was an astronomy project that used an automated telescope to look for AGN at visible and near infrared wavelengths.{{Cite journal|last1=Kobayashi|first1=Y.|last2=Yoshii|first2=Y.|last3=Minezaki|first3=T.|date=2004-10-01|title=MAGNUM project: four years of operation of the fully automated observatory|journal=Astronomische Nachrichten|language=en|volume=325|issue=6–8|pages=537–539|doi=10.1002/asna.200410275|issn=1521-3994|bibcode=2004AN....325..537K}}
