Museum Week started in 2014 with a collaboration of twelve French museums wishing to expand their audience.{{Cite web|url=http://www.culture.gouv.fr/Actualites/MuseumWeek-une-semaine-d-echanges-avec-les-musees|title=MuseumWeek, une semaine d'échanges avec les musées – Ministère de la Culture|website=www.culture.gouv.fr|language=fr|access-date=2019-04-18}} Each year the event promotes a different international cause.{{Cite web|title=#MuseumWeek: Celebrating Digital Museum Work in the Age of COVID-19|url=https://www.aam-us.org/2020/05/01/museumweek-celebrating-digital-museum-work-in-the-age-of-covid-19/|date=2020-05-01|website=American Alliance of Museums|language=en-US|access-date=2020-05-08}}{{Cite news|last=Caines|first=Matthew|date=2014-03-28|title=Museum Week UK – live blog|language=en-GB|work=The Guardian|url=https://www.theguardian.com/culture-professionals-network/2014/mar/24/museum-week-uk-2014-live-blog|access-date=2020-05-08|issn=0261-3077}}

History

Institutions open their doors both virtually and physically. On Twitter, they use seven hashtags (including the hashtag #MuseumWeek), using a different hashtag each day for a week (see table below).{{Cite web|url=https://www.francebleu.fr/loisirs/evenements/museumweek-une-semaine-pour-decouvrir-les-musees-sur-twitter-1427193026|title=#MuseumWeek : une semaine pour découvrir les musées sur Twitter|date=2015-03-24|website=France Bleu|language=fr|access-date=2019-04-18}} Launched in 2014 on Twitter, MuseumWeek brought together almost 700 European institutions on Twitter in the first year.{{Cite web|url=https://www.huffingtonpost.fr/alexia-guggemos/museumweek-2014-entre-dan_b_5091350.html|title=MuseumWeek 2014 entre dans l'histoire du web social : Twitter US salue l'initiative française|last=Guugémos|first=Alexia|date=2014-04-04|website=Le Huffington Post|language=fr|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2019-04-18}}{{Cite web|title=Museum Week Kicks Off With Even More Reasons to Get Virtual Culture|url=http://www.artfixdaily.com/news_feed/2020/05/11/9803-museum-week-kicks-off-with-even-more-reasons-to-get-virtual-cultu|website=ArtfixDaily|language=en|access-date=2020-05-11}}

In 2015, the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie organized an event asking one question: "What is the cultural heritage of our time that will be passed on to future generations?" In response, the institution set out to archive all Tweets featuring the word #MuseumWeek in a time capsule. With a size of 60 × 30 × 28.6 cm and a weight of 30 kilos, the capsule is composed of acrylic, glass, carbon fibre, and metal. Sealed on March 29, 2015 at midnight, it will not be opened before 2035 and contains information for future generations about our way of life and our consumption of art in 2015.{{Cite web|title=Report on the press conference for the launch of #MuseumWeek 2015 – Museum Week 2018|url=http://multimedia-sorbonne.com/mw/english/2015/03/13/report-on-the-press-conference-for-the-launch-of-museumweek-2015/|last=Plowy|first=Didier|date=2015-03-13|website=English|publisher=Sorbonne University|language=en|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190406083713/http://multimedia-sorbonne.com/mw/english/2015/03/13/report-on-the-press-conference-for-the-launch-of-museumweek-2015/|archive-date=2019-04-06|access-date=2019-04-18}}

The 4th event took place in 2017 on new platforms: Instagram, Snapchat, the Chinese social network Weibo, and the Russian network Vkontakte. The event is organized by the association Culture for Causes Network. Each year, MuseumWeek promotes a different theme.

The 2017 MuseumWeek mobilized 2,200 institutions, museums, libraries, galleries in 2016 and expanded to 75 countries in 2017.{{Cite news|url=https://www.lemonde.fr/culture/article/2017/06/25/la-museumweek-s-etend-a-75-pays_5150786_3246.html|title=La #MuseumWeek s'étend à 75 pays|last=Bas Lorant|first=Quentin|date=2017-06-25|work=Le Monde|access-date=2019-04-18|language=fr}} Almost 5,000 institutions participated in 2018, in 120 countries .{{Cite web|url=https://www.monuments-nationaux.fr/Actualites/Museum-Week-2018|title=MuseumWeek 2018|website=Centre des monuments nationaux|language=fr|access-date=2019-04-18}}
