Lyrics
The song was written and sung by lead drummer Glenn Thompson. Thompson would later say, "Ah ha! No look, I was kinda riffing on the idea of being very introspective, saying the vehicle that you are making your art, your art form is rubbish but at the same time you’re loving it. Ha ha, I just thought how punk is that?".{{Cite web |last=bec |title=Custard are Funky Again |url=https://thelivewire.com.au/2021/01/25/custard-are-funky-again/ |access-date=2022-12-18 |language=en-US}} Custard frontman David McCormack noted that when Thompson joined Custard, "He already had "Music Is Crap" and a couple of other great songs which he was playing in another band around Brisbane called Adults Today which sometimes transformed into Adolf Today or Control Group. It was always the same band members but with different names."{{cite web|url=https://www.sonicsherpa.com.au/chris-yates-interviews-dave-mccormack-about-custards-new-album-respect-all-lifeforms/|title=Chris Yates interviews Dave McCormack about Custard’s new album Respect All Lifeforms! |website=Sonic Sherpa|author=Chris Yates}}
Critical reception
The song is often credited with reinvigorating public interest in Custard. Craig Mathieson for The Sydney Morning Herald wrote, "Glenn Thompson specializes in plaintive songs whose sweet melodies mask bittersweet jibes. This is one of his standout efforts".{{Cite web |last=Mathieson |first=Craig |date=2015-12-01 |title=Dave McCormack's Custard comes back (and all is forgiven) |url=https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/custard-20151201-glc5oz.html |access-date=2022-12-18 |website=The Sydney Morning Herald |language=en}} Music critic Noel Mengel named the song the 43rd best from the state of Queensland in 2013.{{Cite web |last=Mengel |first=Noah |title=Noel Mengel's list of top 50 Queensland songs |url=https://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/noel-mengels-top-50-list-of-queensland-songs/news-story/1549292926ac00326b2c047f1b89773b}}
