Duke said in 1999 that Louisiana Republican governor Mike Foster's money had essentially financed My Awakening after Duke told a grand jury that during the 1995 Louisiana governor's race Foster had secretly bought Duke's list of contributors and supporters.{{cite web |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1999/06/22/us/a-dealing-with-david-duke-haunts-louisiana-governor.html |title=A Dealing With David Duke Haunts Louisiana Governor |first=David |last=Firestone |date=June 22, 1999}}

Glayde Whitney, a Florida State University psychology professor, wrote the foreword to the book, calling Duke a "seeker of truth."{{cite web |work=Los Angeles Times |url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-jan-11-me-passings11-story.html |title=Glayde Whitney, 62; Author of Controversial Theory on Race, Genes |date=January 11, 2002}}

Reception

In a book review by Abraham Foxman, then National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), My Awakening was described as "a Minor League Mein Kampf", and Foxman commented that it espouses racist, antisemitic, sexist, and homophobic attitudes.{{cite web |authorlink=Abraham Foxman |last=Foxman |first=Abraham |title=David Duke's My Awakening: A Minor League Mein Kampf |date=January 1999 |publisher=Anti-Defamation League |url=http://www.adl.org/opinion/david_duke_review.asp |accessdate=2006-11-16 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20061114030826/http://www.adl.org/opinion/david_duke_review.asp |archivedate=2006-11-14 }}
