The series takes place in a school whose teachers display bizarre behaviors, with each title focusing on a specific teacher. Each book in the series has a rhyme in the title. The main character, A.J., is a boy who hates school.{{Cite journal|last1=MacMillan|first1=Kathleen Kelly|last2=Mandell|first2=Phyllis Levy|date=2005|title=My Weird School, Books 1-4|url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f6h&AN=16409113&site=ehost-live|journal=School Library Journal|volume=51|issue=3|pages=88|url-access=subscription|via=EBSCOhost}} His rival is a girl named Andrea, who loves school and has a friend, Emily, that A.J. considers a "crybaby."{{Cite journal|last=Pierce|first=Lonna|date=2012|title=Mr. Hynde Is Out of His Mind: My Weird School, Book 6|url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=78360044&site=ehost-live|journal=School Library Journal|volume=58|issue=8|pages=56|url-access=subscription|via=EBSCOhost}} Much of the humor is derived from the plot's unlikely situations{{Cite journal|last=Newschwander|first=Jane|date=2013|title=Ms. LaGrange Is Strange!: The Weird School, Book 8|url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=84641737&site=ehost-live|journal=School Library Journal|volume=59|issue=1|pages=62–64|url-access=subscription|via=EBSCOhost}} and the teachers' personalities which are written to be "outlandish."{{Cite news|last=Devencentis|first=Philip|date=4 February 2009|title=Promoting School As 'Fun Place'|work=Wyckoff Suburban News|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/55221050/|access-date=12 June 2020|via=Newspapers.com}}{{Cite news|date=4 February 2009|title=Author|work=Wyckoff Suburban News|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/55220790/|access-date=12 June 2020|via=Newspapers.com}}

Gutman was initially inspired to write the books after being exposed to the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park and wanted to write something similar from a boy's point of view. Gutman says that he has been inspired by visiting real-life schools, going to 60 schools a year to gather material.{{cite news|last1=La Gorce|first1=Tammy|date=July 13, 2008|title=Neighborhood Storytelling|work=The New York Times|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/13/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/13Rkidauthors.html|access-date=3 July 2020}} He has also stated that his goal in writing the books is to interest children in reading and especially to make reading fun for children who have difficulty in school.{{Cite journal|last=Gutman|first=Dan|date=May 2010|title=How I Corrupted America's Youth|url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f6h&AN=50337475&site=ehost-live|journal=School Library Journal|volume=56|issue=5|pages=28|url-access=subscription|via=EBSCOhost}} The series' defining characteristic of strange teachers comes from Gutman's belief that children enjoy reading about "grownups doing dumb things."{{Cite news|last=Garcia|first=Lauren|date=2015-10-15|title='My Weird School' Author Visits West Belmar School|pages=45|work=The Coast Star|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/55221440/the-coast-star/|access-date=2020-07-12|via=Newspapers.com}} Gutman feels that along with having his own son, the series My Weird School helped launch his writing career.{{Cite news|last=Grant|first=Tracy|date=2011-03-20|title=Children's Author Dan Gutman: He Never Forgets to Laugh|pages=30|work=The Times-News|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/55228483/the-times-news/|access-date=2020-07-12|via=Newspapers.com}}
