The Myanma Port Authority ({{langx|my|မြန်မာ့ဆိပ်ကမ်းအာဏာပိုင်}}, abbreviated MPA) is a government agency vested with the responsibility to regulate and administer the coastal ports of Myanmar. It is a department of the Ministry of Transport. The MPA was founded in 1989 and is located in Yangon.
History
The modern era of the Port of Yangon began in 1880 with the Commissioners for the Port of Rangoon. In 1954, the Board of Management for the Port of Rangoon was established, and then in 1972 the Burma Ports Corporation. The MPA was founded in 1989 to replace the Burma Ports Corporation.[http://dmamyanmar.com/mpa/history.html MPA, History of MPA]{{dead link|date=February 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} In March 2011, MPA began collaborating with a Chinese firm, CCCC TDC Tianjin Dredging, to begin dredging the Port of Yangon, to increase the size of vessels that can dock at the port (to 35,000 tons deadweight, up from the current capacity of 15,000).{{cite news|url=http://www.mmtimes.com/2011/news/565/news56505.html|title=Dredging set to start on Yangon River this month|author=Nay Nwe Moe Aung|date=7 March 2011|work=The Myanmar Times|accessdate=23 August 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110916221919/http://mmtimes.com/2011/news/565/news56505.html|archive-date=2011-09-16|url-status=dead}}
MPA has been involved in contracts to develop Myanmar's Special Economic Zones, including a US$8.6 billion deal to develop a deep sea port at Dawei, by Italian-Thai Development.{{cite news|url=http://www.mmtimes.com/2011/business/561/biz56102.html|title=SPDC signs Special Economic Zone law into effect on Jan 27|author=Aye Thidar Kyaw|author2=Stuart Deed|date=7 February 2011|work=Myanmar Times|accessdate=23 August 2011|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110916034459/http://www.mmtimes.com/2011/business/561/biz56102.html|archivedate=16 September 2011}}
It was reported in 2010 that state-owned ports run by the MPA will be privatised. The country's largest port, Thilawa Port, is currently operated by a Hong Kong-based firm, while another in Ahlone Township is run by Asia World.{{cite news|url=http://www.mmtimes.com/2010/timeout/509/med.html|title=State-owned ports to be privatised as soon as possible|work=The Myanmar Times|first=Ye|last=Lwin|volume=26|issue=509|accessdate=23 August 2011|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120612212757/http://www.mmtimes.com/2010/timeout/509/med.html|archivedate=12 June 2012}}
