Mycoplasma capricolum is a species of Mycoplasma bacteria. It is primarily a pathogen of goats, but has also been found in sheep and cows.[http://www.ebi.ac.uk/2can/genomes/bacteria/Mycoplasma_capricolum.html Mycoplasma capricolum causes caprine pneumonia] The species requires external sources of cholesterol to grow or survive (which usually comes in the form of a natural fatty acid auxotroph), but the uptaken fatty acid is not used as a substrate for energy production but rather for phospholipid synthesis instead.{{Cite journal|last1=SETO|first1=S|last2=MURATA|first2=S|last3=MIYATA|first3=M|date=1997-05-15|title=Characterization of gene expression in|url=https://doi.org/10.1016/S0378-1097(97)00121-3|journal=FEMS Microbiology Letters|volume=150|issue=2|pages=239–247|doi=10.1016/s0378-1097(97)00121-3|pmid=9170268|issn=0378-1097|url-access=subscription}}
