NGC 1579 (also known as the Northern Trifid) is a diffuse nebula located in the constellation of Perseus. It is referred to as the Northern Trifid because of its similar appearance to the Trifid Nebula, which is located in the southern celestial hemisphere of the sky. It is a H II region, a region of star formation.{{cite web |url=https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/06/130607153636.htm |title=A Hubble View of NGC 1579: The Trifid of the North |date=7 Jun 2013 |access-date=9 Jun 2013 }}

The star cluster contains the emission-line star LkHα 101, which provides much of the ionizing radiation in the nebula.{{cite journal|title=LkHα 101 and the Young Cluster in NGC 1579|author=GH Herbig|date=2004|journal= Astronomical Journal|volume=128|issue=3|pages=1233–1253|bibcode=2004AJ....128.1233H|doi=10.1086/423043|s2cid=122724479 |doi-access=free}}

NGC 1579 lies within a giant molecular cloud known as the California Molecular Cloud.{{cite journal|last1=Lada|first1=Charles J.|last2=Lombardi|first2=Marco|last3=Alves|first3=João|title= The California Molecular Cloud|year=2009|journal= Astronomical Journal|volume= 703|issue=1|pages= 52–59|bibcode=2009ApJ...703...52L|doi=10.1088/0004-637X/703/1/52|arxiv=0908.0646|s2cid=15371826 }}
