NGC 3686 is a spiral galaxy that forms with three other spiral galaxies, NGCs 3681, 3684, and 3691, a quartet of galaxies in the Leo constellation.Blackman, C. P. (1980). [http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1980MNRAS.191..123B Surface photometry, mass distributions and stability of the NGC 3686 quartet of galaxies.] Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 191(1), 123–133. It was discovered on 14 March 1784 by William Herschel.{{cite web|url=http://cseligman.com/text/atlas/ngc36a.htm#3686|title=New General Catalogue objects: NGC 3650 – 3699|author=Seligman, Courtney|website=cseligman.com|accessdate=2021-02-14}} It is a member of the NGC 3607 Group of galaxies, which is a member of the Leo II Groups, a series of galaxies and galaxy clusters strung out from the right edge of the Virgo Supercluster.{{cite web | title=The Leo III Groups |work=Atlas of the Universe |url=http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/galgrps/leoii.html |access-date=2010-11-27 |archive-date=July 22, 2012 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20120722223749/http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/galgrps/leoii.html |url-status=live }}
