NGC 6738 is an astronomical feature that is catalogued as an NGC object. Although listed as an open cluster in some astronomical databases, it may be merely an asterism; a 2003 paper in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics describes it as being an "apparent concentration of a few bright stars on patchy background absorption".{{Cite journal | last1 = Boeche | first1 = C. | last2 = Barbon | first2 = R. | last3 = Henden | first3 = A. | last4 = Munari | first4 = U. | last5 = Agnolin | first5 = P. | title = NGC 6738: Not a real open cluster | doi = 10.1051/0004-6361:20030834 | journal = Astronomy and Astrophysics | volume = 406 | issue = 3 | pages = 893–898 | year = 2003 |arxiv = astro-ph/0306093 |bibcode = 2003A&A...406..893B | s2cid = 1433681 }}{{cite web |url=http://www.docdb.net/show_object.php?id=ngc_6738 |title=DOCdb - NGC 6738 |publisher=Deep Sky Observer's Companion | access-date=2012-12-17}}
