NGC 839 is a lenticular galaxy located in the constellation Cetus. It was discovered November 28, 1785 in a sky survey by Wilhelm Herschel.{{cite web|url=http://cseligman.com/text/atlas/ngc8.htm#839|title=New General Catalogue objects: NGC 800 - 849|author=Seligman, Courtney|website=cseligman.com|accessdate=2021-09-08}} It is one of the galaxies that are part of the quadruplet family HGC 16, along with the unbarred lenticular galaxy NGC 838.
NGC 839 is a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) that shows signs of high amounts of star formation; therefore, it is also classified as a starburst galaxy.{{cite journal|doi=10.1088/0004-637X/721/1/505|title=NGC 839: Shocks in an M82-like Superwind|year=2010|bibcode=2010ApJ...721..505R|arxiv=1007.3495|last1=Rich|first1=J.
