NGC 979 is a lenticular galaxy{{Cite web|url=http://spider.seds.org/ngc/revngcic.cgi?NGC979|title=Revised NGC Data for NGC 979|website=spider.seds.org|access-date=2022-05-25}}{{Cite web|url=https://in-the-sky.org/data/object.php?id=NGC979|title=The galaxy NGC 979 - In-The-Sky.org|last=Ford|first=Dominic|website=in-the-sky.org|language=en|access-date=2023-05-25}} located within the constellation of Eridanus. This galaxy has a possible outer ring which is dim but smooth. This structure might be a polar ring. The featurelessness of this galaxy means that it is completely devoid of HII regions and consequently, star formation.{{cite journal |last1=Hawarden |first1=T.G. |last2=Longmore |first2=A.J. |last3=Goss |first3=W.M. |last4=Mebold |first4=U. |last5=Tritton |first5=S.B. |title=Neutral hydrogen in lenticular galaxies with faint discs. |journal=Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society |date=July 1981 |volume=196 |issue=2 |pages=175–183 |doi=10.1093/mnras/196.2.175 |bibcode=1981MNRAS.196..175H |doi-access=free }}
