NHL 2Night is a former news magazine that used to broadcast highlights of National Hockey League games and stories about the league up to five nights a week on ESPN and ESPN2. It was usually broadcast live at 10:00 PM ET or immediately following a game on ESPN2. It was then re-broadcast a few times throughout the night and the following day.
It debuted in 1995. The show was originally hosted by Bill Pidto{{Cite web|date=2018-04-13|title=#FlashbackFriday: NHL 2Night|url=https://www.espnfrontrow.com/2018/04/flashbackfriday-nhl-2night/|access-date=2021-06-04|website=ESPN Front Row|language=en-US}} and later John Buccigross.{{Cite web|title=ESPN.com - TVLISTINGS - NHL 2Night|url=https://www.espn.com/tvlistings/programs/nhl2night.html|access-date=2021-06-04|website=www.espn.com}}{{Cite web|title=Out of Bounds: An interview with John Buccigross|url=https://old.post-gazette.com/sports/other/20021111bounds1111p6.asp|access-date=2021-06-04|website=old.post-gazette.com}} Barry Melrose was the main analyst.
Cancellation
The NHL and ESPN extended their broadcast agreement for the 2004–05 season, with options for the two following seasons. From a high of 129 game telecasts on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC in 1999–2000, the new deal called for 40 games, only 15 during the regular season, on ESPN2. As part of this reduced commitment, the network cancelled NHL2Night.{{cite web |author=Lepore, Steve |date=4 August 2010 |title=The Suitor Tutor, Part 1: On VERSUS and NBC, How Have They Done, and Where the Merger Will Take Them |url=http://puckthemedia.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/the-suitor-tutor-part-1-on-versus-and-nbc-how-have-they-done-and-where-the-merger-will-take-them/#more-5549 |access-date=10 May 2011 |work=Puck The Media |publisher=WordPress.com}}{{Cite news |last=Sandomir |first=Richard |date=2005-05-03 |title=ESPN Appears to Control the Puck Over Carrying N.H.L. ESPNEWS provided expanded segments for Barry Melrose, usually on Thursday nights, to analyze NHL action.
After the NHL returned to ESPN in 2021, the network would announce a new hockey studio show The Point, the successor to NHL 2Night.{{Cite web |last=Rigdon |first=Jay |date=September 30, 2021 |title=ESPN unveils new weekly NHL studio show The Point, hosted by John Buccigross |url=https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/espn-unveils-plans-for-new-weekly-nhl-studio-show-the-point-hosted-by-john-buccigross.html |access-date=September 30, 2021 |website=Awful Announcing |language=en-US}}
