Early life and gymnastics career

Goldsmith is Jewish by birth.[http://www.jewsinsports.org/olympics.asp?ID=620 "Goldsmith, Nancy"] Much of her training (1978 - 1987) was at the National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics in Eugene, Oregon and was coached by Dick Mulvihill.{{cite web|url=http://stanforddailyarchive.com/cgi-bin/stanford?a=d&d=stanford19840109-01.2.41&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------|title=Men Gymnasts Win Open; Women Improve; 9 January 1984|work=The Stanford Daily}}

She attended Stanford University starting in January 1984 on a full gymnastics scholarship, and competed on the gymnastics team while a member of the Israel national team. In 1984, Goldsmith was named All-Western Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1987, she was named Stanford's Most Outstanding Gymnast.

Goldsmith competed for Israel at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 17 in gymnastics.
