Overview

In 2013, the Iraqi government presented the project for a new stadium in Dhi Qar, in the south of the country, with a design signed by the French architecture firm of Bechu & Associés in collaboration with Alain-Charles Perrot.{{cite web|url=https://www.bechuetassocies.com/en/projet/stade-olympique-de-thiqar-de-nasiriyah|title=Olympic Stadium of Nasiriyah Thiqar|date=19 February 2022|publisher=bechuetassocies.com}} The project includes a main stadium with a capacity of 30,000 spectators, two training stadiums seating 2,500 and 500 people respectively, a four-star hotel with 80 rooms and two sports pavilions (aquatic center and sports hall).{{cite web|url=http://www.ur-architecture.com/thiqar-sports-complex.html|title=ThiQar Sports Complex|date=19 February 2022|publisher=UR - Architecture & Urbanisme}}

The project that started in 2013 was supposed to be delivered in two and a half years, but seven years later, only 75% of the stadium was complete.{{cite web|url=https://www.ostadium.com/stadium/4498/olympic-stadium-of-nasiriyah-thiqar|title=Olympic Stadium of Nasiriyah Thiqar|date=19 February 2022|publisher=ostadium.com}}

In January 2022, faced with the delays, the Iraqi government decided to terminate all contracts with the French companies in charge of the work.{{cite web|url=https://www.zawya.com/mena/en/projects/story/PROJECTS_Iraq_ends_deal_with_French_firms_over_stadium_project_delay-ZAWYA20220102100657/|title=PROJECTS: Iraq ends deal with French firms over stadium project delay|date=2 January 2022|publisher=zawya.com}}{{cite web|url=https://www.ostadium.com/news/2101/les-francais-perdent-un-contrat-en-irak|title=Les français perdent un contrat en Irak|date=4 January 2022|publisher=ostadium.com}}

On 20 August 2024, Iraqi prime minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani inaugurated the stadium with a final capacity of 20,000. The main feature of the venue was its walls which contained inscriptions and symbols that reflect the heritage of the Sumerian civilization.{{cite web |url=https://www.ina.iq/215149--20-.html |title=رئيس الوزراء يفتتح ملعب الناصرية الدولي سعة 20 ألف متفرج |publisher=Iraqi News Agency |language=ar |date=20 August 2024 }}
