He is the son of Peter Ackerman and Joanne Leedom-Ackerman.

Ackerman was born in New York City, New York, United States to Joanne Leedom-Ackerman and Peter Ackerman. He was educated at the American School in London{{citation|title=MIT brains, brawn and bright lights go to Athens Olympics|journal=MIT News|publisher=Massachusetts Institute of Technology|url=http://newsoffice.mit.edu/2004/olympics|first=Denise|last=Brehm|date=August 13, 2004}} and then Harvard University, where he graduated in June 2000.
