The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a survey research program conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States, and to track changes over time.{{cite web |title=About the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey |url=https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/about_nhanes.htm |website=CDC/National Center for Health Statistics |publisher=U.S. Department of Health & Human Services |access-date=18 March 2020}} The survey combines interviews, physical examinations and laboratory tests.{{cn|date=March 2024}}

The NHANES interview includes demographic, socioeconomic, dietary, and health-related questions. The examination component consists of medical, dental, and physiological measurements, as well as laboratory tests administered by medical personnel.{{fact|date=January 2024}}

The National Health Survey Act was passed in 1956. The first three national health examination surveys were conducted in the 1960s:

1. 1960-62—National Health Examination Survey I (NHES I);
2. 1963-65—National Health Examination Survey II (NHES II); and
3. 1966-70—National Health Examination Survey III (NHES III).

NHANES findings are used to determine the prevalence of major diseases and risk factors for diseases. Information is used to assess nutritional status and its association with health promotion and disease prevention. NHANES findings are also the basis for national standards for such measurements as height, weight, and blood pressure. NHANES data are used in epidemiological studies and health sciences research (including biomarkers of aging), which help develop sound public health policy, direct and design health programs and services, expand health knowledge, extend healthspan and lifespan.
