Initial reports suggested that the Canadian government's plan of renewal and healing had been a failure, as the community was still plagued with alcohol and drug abuse. The government was accused of creating a system overburdened with bureaucracy, and not adequately addressing the issues. The local tribal band was accused of corruption, as was proven in a 2005 CBC News report in which it was shown that the leadership was trafficking drugs and other illicit substances to maintain power.{{Cite web |date=December 14, 2004 |title=The Innu of Labrador: From Davis Inlet to Natuashish |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/background/aboriginals/natuashish.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20041217030423/https://www.cbc.ca/news/background/aboriginals/natuashish.html |archive-date=December 17, 2004 |access-date=October 16, 2020 |website=CBC News}}{{Cite web |date=Feb 8, 2005 |title=Natuashish: Struggling with the hangovers of old Davis Inlet |url=https://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/natuashish-struggling-with-the-hangovers-of-old-davis-inlet |access-date=Oct 16, 2020 |publisher=CBC}}{{Cite web |last=Power |first=Peter |date=March 6, 2015 |title=A decade after the people of Davis Inlet were relocated, they are still hunting demons |url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/hunting-demons/article23331533/ |access-date=Oct 16, 2020 |publisher=The Globe and Mail}}{{Cite web |date=Feb 9, 2005 |title=Band money fuelling addictions: sources |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/band-money-fuelling-addictions-sources-1.542082 |access-date=Oct 16, 2020 |publisher=CBC News}}{{Cite web |date=Oct 26, 2005 |title=Labrador Innu leaders pocketing band money: audit |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/labrador-innu-leaders-pocketing-band-money-audit-1.542105 |access-date=Oct 16, 2020 |publisher=CBC News}}

The community's attempt to resolve its problem with alcoholism led to a ban on the sale, purchase, and possession of alcohol within the reserve.
