Political career
Verma ran on the BJP ticket in the 2008 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election from Dhar Vidhan Sabha Constituency. Balmukund Goutam of the Indian National Congress (INC) won the seat by two votes in the first vote count; he received 50,507 votes against Verma's 50,505. Verma and her party requested to recount the votes, and she was then declared winner by only one vote.{{cite news | title = Dhar BJP MLA's Election Void: HC | work = The Hindustan Times | date = 20 October 2012 | accessdate = 5 November 2013 | location=Indore | url = http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P3-2793553781.html | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20131111045500/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P3-2793553781.html | url-status = dead | archive-date = 11 November 2013 | via =HighBeam Research }} The final tally of votes was 50,510 to 50,509.{{cite web | url=http://eci.nic.in/archive/oct2008/pollupd/ac/states/s12/aconst201.htm | title=State Elections 2008 – Dhar — Madhya Pradesh | publisher=Eci.nic.in. Goutam challenged Verma's election and the recounting process in the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2009. He petitioned that there was misconduct in counting the postal votes. The Indore Bench of the High Court ruled in favour of Goutam on 19 October 2012, and declared Verma's election void on the grounds of non-compliance of the provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act. Verma filed a recrimination petition against the eligibility of Goutam, in that he did not reveal his criminal background in his affidavit at the time of filing his nomination for the assembly election in 2008, leading to a violation of section 33 (A) and section 123 of Representation of the People Act.{{cite news | url=http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-22/indore/35301912_1_contest-election-petition-field-rp-act | archive-url=https://archive.today/20131106201110/http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-22/indore/35301912_1_contest-election-petition-field-rp-act | url-status=dead | archive-date=6 November 2013 | title=Neena Verma challenges Gatuam's candidature in HC | work=The Times of India | date=22 November 2012 | agency=Times News Network | accessdate=6 November 2013 | location=Indore}} However, the Bench rejected the petition on 23 November 2012.{{cite news | url=http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-24/indore/35332905_1_amendment-plea-declaration-of-final-result-madhya-pradesh-high-court | archive-url=https://archive.today/20131106201124/http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-24/indore/35332905_1_amendment-plea-declaration-of-final-result-madhya-pradesh-high-court | url-status=dead | archive-date=6 November 2013 | title=HC dismisses amendment plea of Neena Verma | work=The Times of India | date=24 November 2012 | agency=Times News Network | accessdate=6 November 2013 | location=Indore}} Goutam was declared elected by the Court on 14 August 2013 and took his oath of office on 24 September 2013.{{cite news | url=http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/madhya-pradesh-pollmeter-never-too-late/article5314707.ece?ref=sliderNews | title=Madhya Pradesh Pollmeter: Never too late | work=The Hindu | date=5 November 2013 | accessdate=5 November 2013}}{{cite news | url=http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mp-hc-declares-cong-candidate-balmukund-singh-winner-from-dhar/414361-3-236.html | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131015223503/http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mp-hc-declares-cong-candidate-balmukund-singh-winner-from-dhar/414361-3-236.html | url-status=dead | archive-date=15 October 2013 | title=MP HC declares Cong candidate Balmukund Singh winner from Dhar | date=14 August 2013 | agency=Press Trust of India | accessdate=6 November 2013 | publisher=CNN-IBN}}
