History

Neglect was formed in 1991 by former Vice Grip members Brian "Zoid" Beal (vocals), Bones (bass), and Rich "Torn" Torn (guitar). They self-released their first demo that same year, followed by another in 1992. After Torn's departure in 1993, the band continued as a four-piece. Signing to Wreckage Records, they released the Pull the Plug 7-inch in 1993. Their debut full-length, End It! (1994), was released on We Bite Records and featured their signature heavy sound.

The band toured Europe in 1994 and released the EP Hang in There to support it. Neglect officially disbanded in 1995 after their final show. In the 2000s, their early material was reissued, sparking renewed interest and a brief reunion in 2005.

Musical style and influence

Neglect’s sound blends hardcore punk with slow, heavy breakdowns and thrash-influenced guitar work. Vocalist Brian Beal’s harsh delivery and nihilistic lyrics often explored themes like hate, self-destruction, and mental illness. The band became known for their aggressive fusion of hardcore and metal, often described as "hatecore,"{{cite web |title=Japan Releases Amazing New 'BEATDOWN HARDCORE GUIDEBOOK' – Author Shares Thoughts |website=Unite Asia |date=21 November 2024 |url=https://uniteasia.org/japan-releases-amazing-new-beatdown-hardcore-guidebook-author-shares-thoughts/ |access-date=13 June 2025}} and for their chaotic live performances.

Musicians such as Phil Anselmo, and Jamey Jasta have cited them as an influence.{{cite web |last=Caruana |first=Vinnie |title=5 Long Island Hardcore Bands That Changed My Life |url=https://www.noecho.net/lists/5-long-island-hardcore-bands-that-changed-my-life-vinnie-caruana |website=No Echo |date=October 8, 2019 |access-date=June 13, 2025}}
