History

In 1998 Renaud Deraison created The Nessus Project as a free remote security scanner.{{cite book|title=Nessus Network Auditing|isbn=978-1-59749-208-9|first=Mark|last=Carey|author2=Russ Rogers|author3=Paul Criscuolo|author4=Mike Petruzzi|date=21 May 2008 |publisher=O'reilly}} On October 5 2005, with the release of Nessus 3, the project changed from the GNU General Public License to a proprietary license.{{cite news|url=https://www.scmagazine.com/home/security-news/celebrating-30-years-in-cybersecuity/|title=SC 30th Anniversary Awards|date=2019-03-09|first=Doug|last=Olenick|publisher=SC Media}}

The Nessus 2 engine and some of the plugins are still using the GNU General Public License, leading to forks based on Nessus like OpenVAS{{r|NNA}}{{cite web|url=http://www.openvas.org/|title=OpenVAS|accessdate=2009-10-21}} and Greenbone Sustainable Resilience.{{cite web|url=https://www.greenbone.net/impressum/|title=Greenbone|accessdate=2021-03-07}}
