Netelia is a genus of ichneumonid wasps in the subfamily Tryphoninae. There are over 330 described species in Netelia grouped into 12 subgenera.{{cite journal |last=Kostro-Ambroziak |first=Agata |date=2011 |title=Netelia (Prosthodocis) japonica (Uchida, 1928) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in the Polish fauna |journal=Polish Journal of Entomology |volume=80 |issue= |pages= 117–121 |doi=10.2478/v10200-011-0008-1|s2cid=86571510 |doi-access=free }}{{cite journal |last1= Choi |first1= Jin-Kyung|last2= Lee | first2= Jong-Wook| date=2017|title=First record of the subgenus Amebachia Uchida of Netelia Gray, 1860 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Tryphoninae) from South Korea|journal=Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity|volume=10 |issue=3 |pages= 431–434|doi= 10.1016/j.japb.2017.04.002|doi-access= free}}{{cite web |url=http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=90179873 |title=Netelia Gray 1860 |last1=Yu |first1= Dicky Sick Ki |last2=van Achterberg |first2= Cornelis |last3=Horstmann |first3= Klaus |date=2012 |website=Taxapad | url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305013306/http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=90179873 |archive-date=March 5, 2016}}
Description and identification
Netelia generally are entirely orange to brownish yellow in color and are medium to large in size, with a fore wing measuring between 6 and 20 mm. They have large ocelli, which often touch the compound eyes and mandibles that are twisted 90°. Both their antennae and legs are conspicuously long for ichneumonids. In contrast to the superficially similar Ophioninae, the forewing usually has veins 2r-m and 3r-m present, the latter of which forms a small, triangular areolet, and has the Rs vein strongly bent as it approaches 3r-m. The ovipositor is also prominent, ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 times the length of the hind tibia.{{cite book |last=Gauld |first=I.D. |date=1984 |title=An Introduction to the Ichneumonidae of Australia |location= London |publisher=British Museum (Natural History) |page= 413 pp |isbn= 0-565-00895-1}}
Identification of species is problematic as most species are similar in both morphology and coloration. The only reliable way to diagnose species is through examination of male genitalia, particularly a structure on the clasper.{{cite web |url=https://nocturnalichs.myspecies.info/node/38 |title=Keys for the identification of British and Irish nocturnal Ichneumonidae |last=Broad |first=Gavin R. |date=2018 |website=Nocturnal Ichneumonoidea of the British Isles |publisher=Department of Entomology, Natural History Museum, London |access-date=2022-02-07}}{{cite journal |last1= Konishi|first1= Kazuhiko|date= 2014|title=A revision of the subgenus Bessobates of the genus Netelia from Japan (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Tryphoninae) |url=https://www.researchgate.net/publication/280204398 |journal=Zootaxa |volume= 3755 |issue=4 |pages= 301–346 |doi=10.11646/zootaxa.3755.4.1 |pmid= 24869824|access-date=2022-02-06}} The strong similarity between species has resulted in misidentifications as well as erroneous reports of species well outside of their natural ranges.
Distribution
This genus is cosmopolitan. The genus has a high density of species, with 81 species reported just between the United States and Canada, for example.{{cite book |last1=Poole |first1=R.W. |last2=Gentili |first2= P. |date=1996 |title= Nomina Insecta Nearctica: A Check List of the Insects of North America.
