Netgear also markets network appliances for the business sector, including managed switches and wired and wireless VPN firewalls. In 2016, Netgear released its Orbi mesh Wi-Fi system, with models for business as well as household use. The system uses a tri-band architecture, similar to the traditional dual-band, but with a dedicated 5 GHz connection between the router and a provided satellite. The addition of a second 5 GHz channel allows the network to distribute its traffic, easing congestion caused by the increasing number of 5 GHz compatible wireless devices present in many household networks.{{Cite web|url=https://www.netgear.com/about/press-releases/2017/ORBI-TRI-BAND-WIFI-SYSTEMS.aspx|title=ORBI TRI-BAND WIFI SYSTEMS {{!}} 2017 {{!}} Press Releases {{!}} About Us {{!}} NETGEAR|website=www.netgear.com|language=en|access-date=2018-07-17|archive-date=November 24, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201124102000/https://www.netgear.com/about/press-releases/2017/ORBI-TRI-BAND-WIFI-SYSTEMS.aspx|url-status=live}} In September 2017, Netgear exited the VPN firewall product category.{{Cite web|url=https://www.netgear.com/business/products/security/vpn-firewalls.aspx|title=VPN Firewalls Series {{!}} Security {{!}} Business {{!}} NETGEAR|website=www.netgear.com|access-date=2019-01-24|archive-date=January 24, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190124152402/https://www.netgear.com/business/products/security/vpn-firewalls.aspx|url-status=live}} At CES 2021, the company unveiled the world's first WiFi 6E router that takes advantage of the 6 GHz frequency band in addition to the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands. Manufacturing
NETGEAR’s primary manufacturers are Cloud Network Technology (more commonly known as Hon Hai Precision or Foxconn Corporation), Delta Electronics Incorporated, Senao Networks, Inc., and Pegatron Corporation, all of which are headquartered in Taiwan. They distribute their manufacturing among a limited number of key suppliers and seek to avoid excessive concentration with any one single supplier.{{Cite web|title=Form 10-K|publisher=U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission|date=December 31, 2023|url=https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001122904/2b9b227c-dd82-4442-8dff-a762ed98e8b8.pdf}} {{PD-notice}}
Manufacturing occurs primarily in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
To maintain quality standards, Netgear has established its own product quality organization, based in Singapore and Taiwan, that is responsible for auditing and inspecting process and product quality on the premises of ODMs and JDMs (Joint Development Manufacturers).
Netgear was unaffected by US President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on Chinese imports. Because all manufacturing is outsourced, the company was able to shift its production lines from China to Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
Product security concerns
In 2014,{{cite news |url=https://www.techrepublic.com/article/faulty-sercomm-router-patch-leaves-backdoor-intact/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140607010947/https://www.techrepublic.com/article/faulty-sercomm-router-patch-leaves-backdoor-intact/|archive-date=7 Jun 2014|title=Faulty Sercomm router patch leaves backdoor intact}} various Netgear products that were manufactured by SerComm were found to contain a backdoor that allowed unauthorized remote access to the affected devices.{{cite web |url=https://github.com/elvanderb/TCP-32764 |title=TCP-32764 GitHub repository |publisher=GitHub |access-date=2014-06-02 |archive-date=December 9, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201209075118/https://github.com/elvanderb/TCP-32764 |url-status=live }} Netgear, along with other companies with products manufactured by SerComm that were affected by the aforementioned backdoor, issued firmware updates for some affected products. However, it was shortly found that the updates merely hid the backdoor but did not remove it.{{cite web |url=http://www.synacktiv.com/ressources/TCP32764_backdoor_again.pdf |title=How Sercomm saved my Easter: Another backdoor in my router: when Christmas is NOT enough! |publisher=:fr:Synacktiv |date=2014 |access-date=2014-12-25 |archive-date=December 14, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201214041713/https://www.synacktiv.com/ressources/TCP32764_backdoor_again.pdf |url-status=live }}
A backdoor also existed on the DG834 series. Any person who can access the router using a web browser, can enable "debug" mode using {{code|code=[IP_ADDR]/setup.cgi?todo=debug}} and then connect via Telnet directly to the router's embedded Linux system as 'root', which gives unfettered access to the router's operating system via its Busybox functionality.{{Cite web |url=http://v2.nat32.com/dg834g.htm |title=Netgear DG834G telnet |access-date=October 28, 2017 |archive-date=November 26, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201126115413/https://v2.nat32.com/dg834g.htm |url-status=live }}[https://web.archive.org/web/20080119003657/http://www.suburbia.com.au/~dan/ DG834G Embedded Linux]
In January 2017, various Netgear products were found to be vulnerable to an exploit that allows third-party access to the router and the internal network and to turn the router into a botnet.{{Cite web |url=https://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2017/01/31/netgear-vulnerability-router-bypass/ |title=Netgear exploit found in 31 models lets hackers turn your router into botnet |date=January 31, 2017 |access-date=January 31, 2017 |archive-date=December 17, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171217041529/https://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2017/01/31/netgear-vulnerability-router-bypass/ |url-status=live }}
This vulnerability occurs when an attacker can access the internal network or when remote management is enabled on the router. In 2020, a vulnerability was discovered that affected many Netgear home WiFi routers. The problem was in a web server built into the router's firmware.
